Eulogy on birthdays
Eulogy on a birthday? What the heck are we saying here? Alright calm down and just read me out.
We all know what EULOGY means. But for the sake of reflection, let us just reiterate what eulogy is. In general, it is an accolade delivered by a privileged love one for their dead. A tribute, not dissimilar to a posthumous award. The accolade relatively is a summation of a dead individual's benevolence, unique positive character as well as his/her contribution to society, organization and possibly to the personal lives of people belonging to his/ her immediate circle. It's a good thing to echo the person's positivities among those who survived his/her passing. It alleviates the pain of separation and stimulates and deepens the endearment to the one who passed away. The tragic irony is that it was never made known to the dead; that all along, he/she was being regarded that way. He can no longer hear and experience human appreciation of his existence; his works and achievements that somehow impacted the lives of those he left behind assuming that there is genuiness in the expression. Why is that? I think eulogy is a mark of egotism, a sibling of foolish pride, it is hypocritical and selfish. Maybe, it is because we do not want to disclose our admiration to another person right before his face due either to preserve a sense of superiority or to hide a feeling of inferiority, among others. It is unkind and cowardly. Everyone would welcome true admiration or perhaps, even merely a perception of it, and there are some who actually seek it. Houdini and Evel Knievel were classic examples. At the expense of their lives, they hurdled the peril of their chosen competence just to be appreciated. Why ? Even the dogs seek appreciation! How many suicides and mass shootings could have been prevented? How many separation and abandonement may have been pre-empted if people were generous enough in expressing out their true positive feelings about a person while he or she is still alive? Everyone has a good side but it is the nature of man to focus on the bad side. I have a notion that some of you may raise a brow but I think the best time to deliver the person's 'eulogy' ... an accolade....aa is on his birthday to the extent that he or she was known personally. It is a milestone in his journey to life, as such, truthful and honest kind words might enable him to ditch some of his emotional baggage and insecurities. It could stock up the needed emotional provision , as well, to build up emotional strenght and reinforce resilience that might come in handy when he tackles his challenges ahead. We are our brother's keeper. Are we not? Just saying!
Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (John 3:18)
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. (Proverbs 3:27)
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8)
